Dream Meaning of Skinning

In the traditional dream lore of Anatolia, to skin is rarely a neutral image. It speaks of boundaries between self and other, of what is yours and what you may take or lose. As with many old interpretations, the exact meaning depends on who is doing the skinning, what is being skinned, and how you feel in the dream.
Skinning Your Own Legs
If in your dream you carefully and cleanly skin your own legs, the old commentators read this as a stroke of good fortune. For a single person, it was often taken as a sign that a marriage is coming, and that the bride will bring her own wealth into the union. Should she come from your own family or tribe, the bond of kinship would only grow stronger. The smooth, deliberate action of the skinning is what marks this as positive; clumsy or forced skinning points elsewhere.
Skinning Yourself or Being Skinned
Some interpreters, however, take any dream of your own skin being removed as a warning about loss. You may see yourself peeling back your own skin, or feel another person stripping it from you. In both cases the dream is thought to signify that you will soon be parted from your money or belongings. If you are ill at the time of the dream, the old sources go further and suggest it may be a sign of death, or of leaving the world behind. For a healthy dreamer, it is more likely a nudge to protect what you own.
Skinning Another Person
When you dream of skinning someone else, the meaning flips around. Here you are the one taking charge, and the dream is understood to mean that you will gain control of that person's property. The act of removing the skin represents taking possession of what the other person has built up. It is not generally seen as malicious, but rather as a natural outcome of your position or effort. Yet it still carries a warning: wealth taken in this way may come with obligations.
Seeing Another Person Skinned
To see another person's skin already removed, or to witness someone being skinned without your participation, is a different matter. The old dream books say this is a sign that your own property will slip away from you. It is as if the loss is happening before your eyes, but you are not the one causing it. If the person in the dream is known to you, the loss may be linked to that person's actions or fate. If the person is a stranger, the warning is more general.
Skinning Specific Body Parts
Traditional interpreters also paid close attention to which part of the body is being skinned. Skinning your right hand was said to indicate taking your brother's inheritance or property, while skinning your left hand pointed to your sister's wealth. Skinning your feet suggested you have begun to covet a relative's land or possessions. And skinning your wife's skin was taken to mean that you are consuming her own personal wealth or goods. These are usually read as warnings about greed within the family.
Skinning an Animal
Not all skinning in dreams involves human flesh. If you dream of skinning an animal, the meaning turns toward separation and sorrow. The old sources say this is a sign that you will be parted from a dear friend or a close companion, and that this parting will bring you great sadness. The animal itself is often seen as a symbol of your own attachments, so the act of skinning it represents a painful break.
Seeing Skin Alone, Black Skin, and Blue Skin
Sometimes the dream does not focus on the act of skinning but on the skin itself. Merely seeing a piece of skin in your dream was taken in old tradition as a sign of a man who spreads gossip. If the skin appears black or blue, the dream points to sorrow and heavy-heartedness. Yet the great interpreter Ibn Sirin is remembered for saying that any skin seen in a dream can indicate abundance and blessing. As with so much in dream reading, you must weigh the condition of the skin and your own feelings in the dream.
In the end, skinning is a dream about exposure and taking. It may herald a marriage and good fortune, or warn of loss and grief. Let the details of your dream and your own waking circumstances be your compass.
